Check your Google Page Rank

Graph imageYou know how important your Google Page Rank is to your position in the results of a Google Search for your keywords. But do you keep track of your website’s Page Rank and make an ongoing effort to improve it.

Not knowing your current Page Rank and not planning a strategy to improve it is one of the most common marketing failures made by websites today. We have just installed a new tool on the OrangeCat.net website so you can track your website’s Google Page Rank.

In addition, this page can tell you whether or not your website is listed in the DMOZ OpenDirectory and Yahoo Directory, two very important sources of website traffic in their own right. Being listed in these two directories can also help your Google Page Rank as they are considered both relevant and authoritative by Google.

The page will also tell you the number of backlinks that Yahoo lists for our site and this statistic raised some interesting questions for me. I know that Google considers quality backlinks important in their ranking process. But one of my sites, that shows 283 Yahoo backlinks only shows 10 for Google. How can this be?

Well, it seems that NEITHER of the two search giants, nor MSN for that matter show all of the links they have cataloged. So, I’m not too sure about the validity of using the numbers of backlinks shown to pat myself on the back or sink into despair. Just keep trying for new ones - but make sure you only seek links from sites that are: 1) high quality and 2) relevant to your business.

If your PageRank is less than 4, you’ve got some work to do. And if you are not listed in Yahoo or DMOZ, get over there and submit a listing request. DMOZ is much tougher to get a listing in than Yahoo, but try.
